A Meeting With The Medicine Man

This is Massoi.  A few weeks ago he got into an altercation with another Maasai cattle herder.  He has his cows he herds and this other guy had stolen one of his herd.  They exchanged words, which quickly escalated into an exchange of spears.

I'm not sure what the other guy looked like, but Massoi isn't healing as well as he expected so he has called in the "doctor", who is like a medicine man.

The treatment takes hours to prepare and includes the solidified fat of a goat (white stuff), and some special brown "medicine" from different roots and who knows what else.

Then you add a goat head full of flies

and more goat parts hanging in a tree.

Put it over a fire to boil for hours and hours

Several people attended like it was a backyard BBQ

The "doctor" or medicine man was kind enough to allow us to take a picture with him

He is very tall

This is the mixing stick.  It is comparable to an egg beater.

They spin the stick back and forth to froth up the soup.

It goes several times through the strainer making sure to get out all of the flies. 

Tyler helped out with the preparation.

Then I gave it a whirl.

Anyways, when it is all prepared Massoi drinks the goat head juice medicine and they tell me it will make him heal faster.

Then everyone joined in.  They offered some to us, but we respectfully declined.  William said that first time he drank it he got sick and even if we had accepted the offer he would not have let us drink it for our safety.
